My Health Record - it's now an opt-out system

A My Health Record is an online summary of your key health information.  It brings together health information from you, your healthcare providers and Medicare.  Your healthcare providers can add clinical documents to your health record including:

  • An overview of your health uploaded by your doctor, called a Shared Health Summary.  This is a useful reference for other doctors or other healthcare providers that you visit
  • Hospital discharge summaries
  • Reports from investigations such as blood tests, x-rays and scans
  • Medications that have been prescribed
  • Referral letters from your doctors

Since of the inception of the My Health Record several years ago, at Midtown Medical Clinic we have been assisting our patients with their registration for a My Health Record and have been uploading information as requested and recommended.  The My Health Record is an invaluable resource for new doctors you may consult, for health professionals in the case of an emergency and for you to simply keep track of your health information, including immunisations and medications.

You can read more about My Health Record here.

As part of the 2017-18 Budget, the Australian Government announced that the My Health Record system would transition to opt-out participation. By the end of 2018, every Australian will have a My Health Record, unless they choose not to have one.

The My Health Record is completely controlled by you.  You control who accesses your record and the content within it.  You can read more about this here.

If you do not wish to have a My Health Record created for you, you must opt-out.  The opt-out period commences on the 16th of July 2018 and ends on the 31st of January 2019.  You can opt out here.

If you would like to register for a My Health Record and set up your own security access and controls before the end of the opt-out period, you can do so here
